Sustainable Buildings Canada (SBC) supports the federal government’s Housing Design Catalogue initiative as a timely response to Canada’s housing crisis but urges that energy performance and accessibility must remain core design requirements—not optional features. While the initiative aims to fast-track construction through a set of pre-approved designs, SBC cautions that offering lower-tier options could lead to a drop in building standards unless climate resilience and universal accessibility are embedded into all baseline templates.
SBC echoes concerns raised by groups like the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC), emphasizing that a one-size-fits-all approach may compromise long-term livability and environmental performance. The organization calls for flexible, climate-sensitive design frameworks and encourages post-occupancy evaluations to ensure real-world effectiveness. SBC remains committed to working with CMHC, RAIC, and accessibility leaders to deliver housing that reflects Canada’s values of equity, resilience, and sustainability.
