Façade Specialist

Christian is a Façade Specialist with WSP’s Building Science team. He specializes in façade consulting and building enclosure commissioning projects. He is passionate about deep energy retrofits and the design of high-performance buildings to help decarbonize the built environment.

Scott Armstrong
Enclosures Expert

Scott is as a subject matter expert on enclosures. He is a LEED Accredited Professional, a Building Science Specialist (BSS), and Certified Engineering Technologist (CET). Scott successfully bridges the traditional gap between Architectural and Engineering disciplines and presents regularly on topics such as enclosure design, high performance building design, and existing building retrofits.

As an electrical engineer, Josh has a deep knowledge of both the underlying fundamentals and practical application of world-class engineering principles, enabling him to holistically evaluate the design and operation of integrated systems.

Jayde is (among many things) a CPACC certified, Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certified professional who is passionate about using universal design practices to make inclusive, accessible spaces that can be enjoyed by all. She is always learning and obtaining new certifications to keep current.

A Certified Sustainable Building Advisor, Bettina is one of the founding members of GreenBuilding, a green building education collaborative and the creator and organizer of the Better Buildings Boot Camp, a week-long interdisciplinary, multi-institutional virtual boot camp for graduate students in Ontario.

Cara Sloat
Sustainable Building Design

Cara is a Senior Mechanical Engineer and an active promoter and designer of sustainable buildings, with design experience in retrofits and new construction. Specializing in multi-unit residential, municipal, and commercial developments, but with broad interest in working with a variety of occupancy types and in district and community design.

Alex Lukachko
Building Enclosure Expert

Alex Lukachko has been a building science and sustainability consultant and educator for over 20 years. Alex teaches the integration of energy, building science and design concepts in the architecture program at the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design at the University of Toronto. As a consultant, Alex is typically involved in early design work for high performance new or retrofits construction, with a particular focus on design to address the climate crisis.

Amy Montgomery
Building Enclosure Expert

As a Professional Engineer, Certified Passive House Consultant, and LEED Accredited Professional, Amy is well-positioned to support the design and construction of high-performance new and existing buildings. She has a particular interest in the preservation of historic and heritage buildings. In addition to holding her Professional Engineers registration in both Ontario and British Columbia, Amy is a member of the Association of Preservation Technology International (APT), Passive House Institute US (PHIUS), and the Canadian Green Building Council (CaGBC).

Andrea Pietila
Energy and Sustainability Expert

Andrea’s typical responsibilities include performing whole building energy modelling simulations from the design phase to construction, and in-depth building concept analysis to determine the feasibility of potential options. Her work is focused on both new construction and existing buildings. Andrea collaborates directly with owners and design teams to achieve their high efficiency goals, including net zero, by providing her expertise on using energy efficiency measures and renewable technologies.

Kelsey Saunders
Buildings Enclosure Expert

Kelsey’s work is focused on early-stage consulting on new construction projects across North America with a particular interest in low carbon buildings both in terms of operational and embodied carbon. She takes a passive, enclosure-first design approach and has had the opportunity to work on several Passive House, net zero carbon, mass timber, and prefabricated panelized enclosure projects.

Sarah Gray
Buildings Enclosure Expert

Sarah Gray has been in the building science field for over 20 years. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from the University of Cincinnati and a Master of Science in historic preservation from the University of Pennsylvania. Her work is focused on heritage building rehabilitation, existing building condition assessment and deep retrofits, building enclosure consulting for new construction, and Building Enclosure Commissioning services. She has provided building enclosure Subject Matter Expert support to Sustainable Buildings Canada for several years.

Steve Kemp
National Energy Codes Expert

Steve is renowned as one of Canada’s top energy efficiency and carbon reduction experts. He works with architects and developers to lay the foundations for sustainable and high-performance buildings that mitigate climate change. He is skilled in numerous low carbon technologies, including geothermal energy, smart lighting control, solar power generation, solar thermal, energy recovery, and thermal storage.

Leslie Kulperger
Program Delivery and Evaluation Expert

Leslie a continuous improvement professional focused on the environment, sustainability, and energy conservation. For over 20 years, Leslie has developed expertise in several areas, including researching and developing regional, provincial, and national waste reduction, conservation, and energy efficiency programs, implementing and scaling programs across multiple jurisdictions, evaluating technologies and programs, managing the evaluation and audit for a large-scale portfolio of Demand-side Management offerings in Ontario, and integrating organizational systems (e.g., Environment, Health, and Safety management system into an organizational Operations system).

Anjali Varma
Clean Tech and Venture Capital Expert

Anjali Varma has over 20 years of practical experience in promoting sustainability to increase profitability in business, governments and not for profit entities. She specializes in fund raising, business plans, technology development, program design and delivery, workshops and training for private and public entities delivering products, services or knowledge intended to mitigate climate change. She has also developed, organized and participated in industry initiatives and/or stakeholder groups designed to address or overcome challenges preventing widespread adoption of climate change efforts. Over her career she has attracted over $750M into three clean-tech sector and has undertaken, developed and/or lead the due diligence process to obtain funding from a variety of sources.

Sebastián Carrizo​​
Energy and Sustainability Expert

Sebastián is a Senior Building Performance Consultant who joined DIALOG with extensive experience in energy simulation and analysis, over a range of market sectors including commercial, education, healthcare, and residential buildings. Sebastián’s focus is on the energy performance of buildings, including complying with local green building codes, attaining Net Zero or LEED certification, and hitting energy efficiency targets specific to an organization. He works closely with design teams from an early stage to create high performance buildings both for new construction or existing building retrofits.

Craig McIntyre
Energy and Sustainability Expert

With over 15 years of experience in the sustainable design industry, Craig leads the sustainability services division at EQ Building Performance, offering sustainability consulting, LEED project management, commissioning, measurement & verification, and energy modelling services. Craig is currently involved in over 50 LEED projects as LEED coordinator, energy simulator, and/or commissioning agent. He applies his extensive expertise in realizing energy savings across buildings in various sectors, including high-rise residential, municipal, academic, and industrial. Craig is recognized as an experienced energy modeling consultant by the CaGBC, Natural Resources Canada, and Enbridge Gas.

Oleksandra Onisko
Building Energy Modelling Expert

Oleksandra Onisko is a founding principal at Pratus Group. With over 13 years of industry experience Oleksandra combines engineering and technical knowledge with a passion for sustainability. Oleksandra lead a team which specializes in detailed building simulation for the purpose of design optimization, Net Zero and Zero Carbon projects, LEED energy modeling, building code compliance, incentive applications, HVAC system comparisons and early-stage impact analysis of elementary architectural design options. Oleksandra is a Certified Measurement and Verification Professional (CMVP) with extensive experience in developing M and V plans and procedures, energy model calibration and energy verification.

Mercedes Byers
High-Performance Building Expert

Mercedes Byers is a founding principal of Pratus Group, a full-service sustainability and energy management firm located in Toronto, ON. Mercedes’ role focuses on the coordination of high-performance building projects by providing design assistance consulting regarding energy efficiency and sustainable building best practices. In addition, Mercedes assists clients seeking LEED certification, Fitwel certification, WELL Certification, and Net Zero Carbon design. Other responsibilities include sustainability master planning, whole building life cycle analysis (LCA) and benchmarking and reporting.

Gerry Cornwell
Lighting Designer/Consultant

Gerry Cornwell, LC, is one of the leading lighting designers in Canada, with over 40 years experience as an award-winning independent designer with projects in the museum, art gallery, commercial, institutional and residential markets. He has been an independent consultant and lighting educator since 1981, with projects across Canada and in the United States. Gerry Cornwell is the founder of the only university level Lighting Design Certificate program in Canada, at Ryerson University. He conducts lighting education programs for the Illuminating Engineering Society, and for international clients.

Dave Petersen
Low-energy building specialist

Dave Petersen is a low-energy building specialist with 3 decades of experience in the built environment. David specializes in passive systems with an emphasis on fenestration product and application design. David is the founder of Outside In Design Build, a consultancy that assists developers, architects and builders achieve high performance goals by applying the Integrated Design Process to help balance energy use, carbon and first cost components of the build. David is also co-founder and partner in Citystem, a design/build entity that applies a panelized approach in creating small, bespoke Laneway and ADU residences that aid in thoughtful densification within the GTHA.

Jenny Hill
Green Infrastructure and Storm Water Management

Jenny Hill (Jen) is an Assistant Dean in the Daniels Faculty at the University of Toronto, where she teaches Landscape Hydrology. Her consulting and research work encompasses both landscape and building scale water resources management. Prior to rejoining the University she was a Research Scientist and the primary technical author to the revised Ontario Conservation Authorities’ online guide for the design of low impact development (LID) strategies for stormwater management. Jen has been contributing to the Savings by Design program for Sustainable Buildings Canada since 2015, and regularly participates in review panels for non-governmental organizations and municipalities. She holds degrees in Water Resources Engineering, Landscape Architecture, Forensic Science, and Chemistry.

Maureen E Farrell
Program Design and Delivery Expert

Maureen is an accomplished business leader with over 25 years of consulting experience in both the private and public sectors, leading major client business improvement strategy and regulatory projects. She has an established reputation for producing high quality results and client service excellence and takes action to achieve successful outcomes for all stakeholders. Maureen has been part of the Savings By Design team for 10 years and is responsible for project methodology, risk mitigation, process improvement, project management, deliverable design/build, and production management.

Robin Hutcheson
Renewable energy and high performance buildings

Robin Hutcheson has been a part of the SBC team since 2013, providing facilitation, and expertise with renewable energy, HVAC systems, and commissioning. He also served on the SBC Board of Directors. His engineering firm, Arborus Consulting works on high performance buildings and renewable energy supply. With the evolving impact of climate change, he has also turned his attention to Infrastructure Resilience, completing a professional program with the Climate Risk Institute and has prepared climate risk analysis for projects. All development projects must limit greenhouse gas emissions and incorporate resiliency measures to be sustainable. SBC can help your project get there.

Haley Rae Dinnall-Atkinson
Accessibility Specialist

Haley Rae is committed to using an intersectional approach to design, actively including and learning from people with a range of perspectives, and educating others about the diversity of ways to create spaces for all. She helps to lead and develop inclusive design strategies and practices across multiple complex projects and various public forums. She primarily focuses on services such as consulting, certification and benchmarking, guidelines and standards, building audits, and training. She contributes her technical expertise on national, provincial and municipal accessibility requirements and better practices. She actively practices allyship, and draws on her lived, professional and volunteer experiences to advocate for inclusion, equity and accessibility. Haley Rae's background in environmental design, and experience as a design educator at OCAD University, contribute to her unique perspective in accessibility consulting.

Randy Van Straaten
Building Envelope/Building Science Expert

Dr. Randy Van Straaten is the President and a Building Science Specialist at Building Enclosure Labs Inc (BELi) in London Ontario. BELi is a client focused laboratory testing, analysis, and consulting firm bringing science and sustainability expertise to the building industry. Current work is focused on existing buildings including: risk assessments and design assistance for insulation retrofits of old buildings; embodied carbon analysis for products and buildings; facility decarbonization planning; and testing, analysis, and field reviews supporting litigation and warranty claims. Randy also teaches Building Science for Retrofits at George Brown College and Building Performance at Ryerson University.

Nicole Parsons
Façade Engineering Specialist

Nicole Parsons is a Façade Specialist in the Building Sciences group in WSP’s Toronto office with a focus on new construction and deep retrofit. She enjoys seeing her projects through from conception to completion including the problem solving involved with working through challenging detailing to ensure the client is receiving the quality they expect. Nicole believes a successful project is dependent on effective communication between all team members; the consultants, the contractor and the owner. Nicole has worked in WSP’s Toronto, Calgary and Hamilton offices.

Vito Casola
Energy Systems Specialist

Founder and President of POWER GENySYS, Vito Casola is a professional Engineer with 35 years experience, specializing in natural gas, biogas and landfill gas fuelled Cogeneration, Combined Heat & Emergency Power (CHeP), and CHP / District Energy Systems from project inception to commercial operation. Kevin Day
Building Performance and Enclosure Expert

Kevin has over 30 years of building science, enclosure engineering and restoration experience across Canada and the USA. He focuses on building performance, durability, and energy efficiency – he’s a current member of standard committees: CSA S478 Guideline for Durability in Buildings, and CSA A440.6 High Exposure Fenestration Installation. In 1999, Kevin started the ULC-S716 series of EIFS standards as committee chairman, residing on the task group until 2008, then rejoining in 2021. He was on the ULC-S700A Thermal Insulation Committee from 1999-2008 as well as ULC-S700B from 2006-2012. Kevin received the Anthony A. Woods Award (the Beckie) by the Ontario Building Envelope Council in 2014. Kevin is a former member of ASTM E6, C11, and C16, on building performance, gypsum systems and thermal insulation materials. In 2021, Kevin was appointed ISO Technical Committee 163 - SC3 - Thermal insulation products, components and systems, and designated as the EIFS expert for Canada in Working Group 9.

Adam Sylvestre
HVAC Design Expert

Adam is the founder and president of Sustainable HVAC Design, Inc. Adam has 11 years of experience in the residential HVAC design industry. He is HRAI-certified in air system and hydronics design and an IGSHPA-certified residential geothermal designer. He draws on his production and custom home experience to design energy-efficient systems with home comfort in mind. He holds a degree in engineering technology and a diploma in alternative energy engineering.

Larry Brydon
Codes and Standards

Larry Brydon is a Sustainability Consultant and past VP of Business Development and Regulatory Affairs with Cricket Energy Holdings Inc. With over 30 years’ experience in energy efficiency, green building, sustainable development and clean energy, Larry supports the residential construction Industry with code development and technology innovation knowledge transfer. He has been appointed to numerous federal, provincial and municipal taskforce positions including the Federal Renewable Heating Initiative, Provincial Building Code Development and Toronto Pandemic Recovery Committees. Larry has extensive Board governance experience with SBC, BILD, EnerQuality, CaGBC Toronto Chapter and iiSBE, an International UNEP organization.

Mudit Srivastava
Mechanical Expert

With a passion for developing a sustainable built environment, Mudit is a Mechanical Engineer specializing in design process optimization to deliver high performance buildings and believes in an integrated design approach to exceed stakeholder expectations by providing them contemporary and cost-effective solutions for achieving project goals by utilizing low carbon building design strategies. Along with a deep understanding of thermal systems design and sustainable design skills acquired during Master of Engineering degree, Mudit has gained experience working in several different market sectors.

Sadaf Ghalib
Carbon Accounting and Reporting

Sadaf is a technical subject matter expert in sustainable design, energy efficiency, high performance buildings and retrofits. She has been directly involved in developing policies at a local, regional and national level. As a LEED AP, Sadaf applies her expertise in sustainable master planning, decarbonizing existing buildings and focusing on passive design for new construction across multiple sectors. Her specializations include carbon accounting and reporting, embodied carbon and life cycle assessments.

Abiran Raveenthiran is the Vice President and Co-Founder of VxV Solutions, a leading lighting controls and IoT/Ai building technology agency and integrator. With a strong commitment to creative design implementation and sustainability, Abiran has made it his mission to transform Canada's landscape. Beyond his contributions to VxV Solutions, Abiran actively engages in various roles within the construction community. He serves as an Executive Member of the Canadian Green Building Council's Emerging Green Professionals Team, contributing to the advancement of sustainable practices in the industry.

Nash Martis
Senior Electrical Engineer

Nash is passionate about electrical engineering including low voltage communication/security systems, and its direct and indirect impact on business and communities he is involved with. From conceptualization, to planning and design, construction reviews and testing and commissioning, he delivers successfully to each project’s unique needs. Nash stays up to date with latest technology trends that I apply to new projects and to client’s requirements. My designs are influenced by ASHRAE 90.1, NECB, LEED, WELL, NetZero, PH, TGS, Green Globes.

Ali is an experienced Project Manager specializing in renewable energy with a focus on hydro, wind, solar, hydrogen, and battery storage. Currently Sustainability Coordinator at the City of St. John's, overseeing climate action strategies, energy usage tracking, and greenhouse gas mitigation. Proven in planning, executing, and monitoring large projects, negotiating contracts, and fostering positive stakeholder relationships. Skilled in research, team collaboration, and optimizing renewable energy systems for sustainable practices.

Meg Olson
Stormwater Management

Meg Olson is a water resources engineer whose work in sustainable stormwater management is informed by her training in urban planning and experience in hazards mitigation. She is a licensed engineer in Ontario and is especially interested in how projects can ask good questions about the potential for stormwater on their site from the project inception.
