Vertical Indoor Garden:
Vertical Indoor Garden (VIGA™) is a revolutionary indoor regenerative design concept inspired by biomimicry and biophilia. VIGA™ houses three mutually-beneficial ecosystem components: the ‘Wetland’ uses a combination of biochar, earthworms, and fish to grow air purifying plants and root vegetables; the ‘Farm’ produces rapid growing organic vegetation with nutrient rich water; and the ‘Pond’ provides system conditioning by generating nutrient-abundant fish food. VIGA™ brings nature into indoor spaces, thereby facilitating organic food production, occupant wellbeing, and interactive education to produce net positive impacts to the indoor environments.
Presented by Mr. Phil Fung:
Mr. Fung is a P. Eng. and Designated Consulting Engineer in Ontario, holding a B.A.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering and a M.Sc. in Systems Engineering. Mr. Fung holds several professional designations including LEED AP BD+C, Certified Sustainable Building Advisor, and Certified Energy Manager among many others. Starting his career as an Automation and Robotics Engineer at Digital Equipment Corporation in 1987, he joined SRS Consulting Engineers in 1997, and became its Managing Principal in 2004. In 2012, Mr. Fung accepted the part-time professorship at Humber College. In the course of his career, Mr. Fung designed and built his first Vertical Indoor Garden (patent pending) in early 2014 which was based on biomimetic and biophilic design principles. Mr. Fung is conducting biomimetic design research with McMaster University and the University of Toronto. He has published biomimicry articles in PEO magazine, delivered biomimetic design lectures at Ryerson University and York Schulich MBA, and conducted a biomimetic design seminar at the IIDEX Show.

Indoor radon is the second-leading cause of lung cancer in Canada, and breathing it over prolonged periods can present a significant health risk to families all over the country. Radon gas can enter the indoor environment and contact people as a result of the way homes, schools and workplaces are designed, constructed and maintained. This presentation will provide a brief overview of the cause of radon, where radon occurs, how radon enters structures, the status of current building code requirements, and a review of solutions for mitigating risk of exposure. The presentation will feature an introduction to RadonGuard, which includes Plasti-Fab’s RadonGuard insulation as a component of this CCMC approved mitigation system.

Quad Lock Insulated Concrete Formwork:
Quad-Lock is a panel type Insulated Concrete Formwork wall system consisting of panels, ties, metal track, and metal brackets. Quad-Lock Panels are made with high density, fire retardant expanded polystyrene (EPS) which uses no formaldehyde, HFCs or CFCs. Seven panel types and eight types of plastic ties allow design flexibility using standard components. R-values range from R-22 to R-59 and more - the highest in the industry. ICF systems are growing in popularity for low to mid-rise construction projects as demand for energy efficient assemblies grows. Applications for ICF systems include above and below grade wall assemblies as well as shear walls, demising walls, and fire resistant wall assemblies.
