This guidance document, created by Breanne Belitski, is a summation of the research she undertook as part of her graduate research in Building Science at Toronto Metropolitan University. The document seeks to broaden awareness among professionals involved in building design, with a particular focus on building enclosures, and guides the reader towards actions and resources that can assist them in reducing the whole life cycle carbon impact of their assembly design. It looks to illuminate the pathways for reducing the whole life cycle carbon impact through informed design decisions. By delving into operational carbon, upfront embodied carbon, and the influence of durability and circularity on whole life cycle carbon emissions, the guidance document provides a comprehensive overview of critical carbon considerations. Accompanied by an array of resources for deeper exploration, it introduces an actionable framework in the form of a practical yes/no checklist. This checklist is designed to prompt designers to consider the full life cycle of a building, guiding them towards choices that mitigate carbon emissions effectively, both immediately and over time.
